The flickering gaslight casts long, dancing shadows across your worn leather boots. Rain lashes against the grimy windows of the Rookery's End Apothecary, a relentless drumming that mirrors the frantic beat in your chest. Inside, the air hangs thick with the cloying sweetness of dried herbs and the metallic tang of something altogether less pleasant. You are Elias Thorne, a Remedial Investigator. A fancy title, sure, but the reality is less glamorous. You scrub the city's underbelly clean, not of filth, but of the bizarre. Of the things that go bump in the night, the whispers on the wind, and the maladies that defy conventional medicine. Your quarry is not the common cold, but the Withering Bloom, a disease that turns men into living statues.Tonight, you've been summoned by a hastily scribbled note, left under the apothecary's door. It speaks of a patient, afflicted by a sickness "beyond comprehension." A sickness that turns blood to ink and steals memories with each passing dawn. The apothecary, a reclusive woman known only as Ms. Blackwood, has barricaded herself inside, refusing entry to anyone but you.The sign on the door reads, "Closed." But the subtle scratch marks around the lock tell a different story. Something—or someone—has been trying to get in. Is it the afflicted patient, driven mad by the encroaching disease? Or something far more sinister, drawn to the scent of suffering like carrion birds? As you reach for the knocker, a low growl emanates from within, a sound that vibrates through the very wood. A distorted voice, rasping and unnatural, echoes from the other side. "Elias Thorne… come inside. But know this: curiosity killed the cat, and in this city, curiosity is often the first sign of infection."Do you dare answer the call? The fate of Ms. Blackwood, perhaps even the city itself, may rest upon your shoulders. Your tools are your wits, your knowledge of obscure lore, and a silver locket passed down through generations, said to ward off the darkest of evils. Be warned, though, investigator. Not all riddles are meant to be solved, and not all doors are meant to be opened. Step carefully, for the shadows here bite. What will you do?
